Collecting miniatures can be a lot of fun. Many miniature collectors are very serious enthusiasts that put a lot of hard work into their collections. It is not just a matter of making a purchase and having it look pretty. Quite often everything from painting to flooring will be involved in the creation of a dollhouse. There are a wide variety of tools needed for collectors that prefer to do all of this stuff themselves. Of course, it is always best to have all of your tools before hand so that you do not come to a point where you are missing something and need to go get it. There are many different types of miniature projects, dollhouses are just one type. No matter which type you are into, there is likely a set of tools that you will need.

A large amount of the tools that you will need can be found within your own home at most times. When dealing with such small items as miniature collectibles, often you will need tiny items to use as tools. Toothpicks are one thing that there is always a use for. Having a variety of glue types and tape is also recommended. Keep a pen and notebook handy as well so you can keep track of all of the things you are doing as well as a list of any items that you will need to pick up. You may also have an opportunity to make good use of your recyclables by using old containers for things like mixing paint.

It is a great idea to keep a good Exacto knife on hand. You never know when you will need to do some cutting. If you are working on a dollhouse then you will likely do plenty of cutting, especially if you are installing flooring or other décor. A ruler is absolutely essential. There are many times when you will need to do measurements and they must be exact. Lacking a good ruler could be one of the first things to cause a problem in your creation. It is best to have two rulers: one that is rigid for hard surfaces and one that is flexible for soft surfaces or corners.

Depending on the project that you are working on, having some pliers and wire cutters is a good idea. If you plan to do any electrical work to a dollhouse, you will likely need these tools at some point. One important item that can easily go overlooked is the proper magnifying equipment. When working with miniatures, it can become quite straining on the eyes. A magnifying glass will help you see the small details and ease the strain on your eye muscles. Look for one with a headband attachment so that you can work with your hands free.

Proper and efficient preparations are major components to your collection and how it comes to life. Having the right tools should always be your very first priority. Make sure you have all of the right tools in the beginning so that you can spend the rest of your time focusing on your miniatures.
